The leopard responsible for killing two minor boys in recent incidents which took place in Mahore tehsil of district Reasi has been eliminated on 23rd December late evening near Mohra  Muslimkote of Barni village, Panchayat Sarh of Mahore.

Chief Wildlife Warden/PCCF  Suresh Chugh on the recommendation of the district administration and reports received from the  concerned Wildlife Officials had issued the order for eliminating the man-eater leopard after all the  efforts put in by the wildlife officials, district administration, police and army could not succeed  to trap or tranquilized the leopard, an official told Ziraat Times.

The wildlife officials had laid trapping cages in the area and deployed field staff equipped with tranquilizing guns. However, due to rugged hilly terrain and dense forests the leopard could not be trapped or tranquilized, an official statement said.

The Chief Wildlife Warden by the power vested in him under the Jammu and Kashmir Wildlife (Protection) Act 1978, had authorised the Senior Superintendent of Police Reasi to hunt or cause the said animal to be hunted by engaging the sharp shooters under certain terms and conditions, Tahir Shawl, Regional Wildlife Warden, Jammu Region, said.

The district administration and Wildlife officials had apprehended that in case the man-eater was not hunted there would be more killings of human beings in the area. The leopard had killed an 8 year old minor boy Rehmat Ali at Kansoli on 7 December and another minor, about 3 year old Waseem , at Jamlan hill on 17 December.

The body of the leopard has been disposed by putting on pyre after conducting post mortem in presence of the Wildlife Warden Rajouri Mushtaq Hussain,  Munshi Ram ,Executive Magistrate Ist class Mahore, Sudesh Kumar Choudhary, Wildlife Range Officer Rajouri, Sajad Iqbal SHO Mahore and other wildlife officials on 24 December late evening.
