Krishi Vigyan Kendra-Leh celebrated ‘World Breastfeeding Week’ at village Chemday in Kharu block of Leh district. In this context an awareness programme was organized in which many women and farm women from different villages of the block participated. A team of scientists from Krishi Vigyan Kendra-Leh was a part of the awareness programme.

Dr. Parveen Kumar Subject Matter Specialist (Ag. Extension) while addressing the participants told them about the importance of this day. He elaborated that this day has been celebrated since 1992 globally as an endaveour of the world community to promote the health of the newly born babies and to reduce the mortality rates. He advised all of them to promote breastfeeding as mother’s milk is the best for the baby. It contains all the essential nutrients required for the healthy growth of the babies that gives immunity to the babies from many diseases.

Dr. Touseef Ahmed Subject Matter Specialist (Post harvest technology) spoke on the importance of this day and asked the women to carry on breast feeding for at least one year. He also talked about the ill effects of different synthetic products available in the market. Dr. Nazir Ahmed Subject Matter Specialist (Animal Science) also laid stress on the importance of mother’s milk.

He responded to all the queries of the participants and asked all of them to further take this message to each and every household regarding the importance of breast feeding. The women also pledged to promote breastfeeding. The programme was conducted under the supervision of Dr. D. Namgyal, Head KVK-Leh.
