Leh: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Nyoma (SKUAST-K) organised one day training programme on ‘packaging technology for fruits and vegetables’ to the extension personnel of Agriculture Department and Horticulture Department of Leh district.

While welcoming the dignitaries, Dr. Maheshwar Singh, Programme Coordinator/Head, KVK Nyoma, said that since both the departments produce horticultural crops, it is important to have technical know-how about the post harvest technologies of produce in order to minimise the post harvest loss.

Dr. Anwar Hussain, subject matter specialist, food technology/PHT, gave a power point presentation on the topic. He said that it is important to have this post harvest technology in Ladakh, to overcome the problem of market glut of horticultural produce and non availability of fruits and vegetables during lean months. He briefed about the various types of packets being used, both consumer/retail packs and transport/bulk packs and their advantages as well as drawbacks.

He also discussed about various packaging technologies such as Film Packaging, Shrink Wrap Packaging, Vacuum Packaging, Modified Atmosphere Packaging, Active Packaging, Intelligent/Smart Packaging, Packaging with Edible Coatings/Films, Biodegradable Packaging and Antimicrobial packaging. Ms. Jigmet laskit, Programme Assistant gave vote of thanks.  Phuntsog Wangchuk, Chief Horticulture Officer,  Tashi Tsetan, Chief Agriculture Officer and scientists of KVK Nyoma was also present on the occasion.
